Building Capacity of Land Tribunals and Local Leaders in three Districts to resolve Land Governance Challenges
The Network of Excellence in Land Governance in Africa (NELGA) through its Eastern Africa Hub hosted at Ardhi University with support from GIZ organized a series of workshops on awareness creation on land laws in three local authorities namely: Ilemela Municipal Council, Chato and Shinyanga Rural District Councils between 1st – 5th April 2019. The workshops were meant to enhance capacity of members serving in the Ward Land Tribunals to address various land governance challenges in their respective jurisdictions. The workshops focused on the two principal land legislation i.e. the Land Act No.4 of 1999 and the Village Land Act, No. 5 of 1999; Land Conflicts and Women Land Rights.
A day –long workshop session was conducted in each district. The workshop participants were mainly members of Ward Land Tribunals to include members of the respective authority’s District Land Committees, Ward Councilors and Sub Ward leaders. A total of 344 individuals took part in these workshops.
The workshops were facilitated by four Lecturers from the Land Administration Unit at Ardhi University led by Dr. Hidaya Kayuza. Others included Dr. Agnes Mwasumbi, Dr. Fredrick Magina and Dr. Zakaria Ngereja. This was the second in the series of planned outreach activities being undertaken by the Land Administration Unit. The first session of workshops was held in 2017 in Chalinze and Bagamoyo Districts.
